WATER CONSERVATION

  • Reduce usage:under Mayor Chávez’s leadership, Albuquerque residents, who represent approximately 50% of all water use, have reduced their usage by 39%.
  • Ensure a sustainable water supply: City leaders and water customers have invested more than $50 million in the San Juan-Chama water project to help Albuquerque recharge its groundwater aquifer
  • Manage existing resources: thanks to visionary planning, the Heron Reservoir supports beneficial activities such as supplementing the drinking water supply and recharging the underground aquifer
GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS
  • Visionary policy: In June 2005, Mayor Chávez signed the
    U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, committing City to reduce emissions by 7% in the next 5 years
  • Reduced emission: Since 1990, Albuquerque City government has reduced Green- house Gas emissions by 64% in areas of City Services and by 91% from City landfills
  • Reduce use: the City government reduced natural gas usage by 42% and refrigerant by 95%
RENEWABLE ENERGY AND BIOFUELS
  • Wind power: 15% of Albuquerque’s energy is derived from wind power
  • Bio diesel: City Fleet now uses Bio diesel
  • Solar power: 5 City swimming pools are installing solar heating systems
  • Waste into fuel: Closed City landfill converts landfill gas into energy
ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION
  • Public transportation: Albuquerque’s Rapid Ride program boasts 12 hybrid buses, and along with 85 CNG buses and para-transit vans
  • Biking: all city buses have bicycle racks to promote convenient city bike usage
  • Alternative energy vehicles: Mayor Chávez has issued an Executive Order to only purchase alternative fueled City Fleet Vehicles
  • Upgrade current city fleet: the City has undertaken a massive effort to convert City vehicles to use bio diesel
ENERGY CONSERVATION
  • Signs of change: traffic signals converted to energy-saving LED technology
  • Power to the people: the City hosted a Sustainable Energy Town Hall meeting
  • Clean buildings: Albuquerque is monitoring City buildings to decrease energy use
